Even worse was the aftermath, with John-Paul not being allowed to grief because both James Sutton and Guy Burnet, who played the storyline's endgame lover, Craig, were on a tight schedule...

Ianto Jones (TORCHWOOD, alien virus)
Ianto died in Jack's arms in CHILDREN OF EARTH when Jack refused to give into the 456's demands. The nasty aliens released a virus, which killed both Jack (for a couple of minutes) and Ianto. Ever since, BBC WALES never had to pay for coffee beans again and there are still areas in TV fandom land that series creator Russell T. Davies should avoid after dark...

Reid Oliver (AS THE WORLD TURNS, train collision)
Reid Oliver drew his last breath as ATWT was getting ready to do the same. No other character, except maybe for Kieron) ever got things more contentious on TGoDT. There was never any middle ground- you either hated him or loved him. His heart does go on...

Fer Redondo (FISICA O QUIMICA, gun shot)
FoQ's most popular character? Gay teenager Fer! As the show's run came to an end, Fer died in the last moments of a hostage situation at his school. The actor didn't disappear from screens afterwards- both his boyfriend, David, and his best friend Yoli were able to talk to him and let him go.

Jackson Walsh (EMMERDALE, assisted suicide)
Emmerdale has taken it upon itself to make it absolutely clear that you shouldn't expect it to get better EVER. Life is just one long stream of failures, horrible dramas and depressing situations. After Jackson was hit by a train, he couldn't adjust to his new immobile life and asked his mom and lover to help him end it.

Jesus Velasquez (TRUE BLOOD, stabbed)
No character is safe in TRUE BLOOD and none hurt more than Jesus, who was stabbed to death by his boyfriend Lafayette, who was possessed by an evil spirit, at the end of season 4.

Roman Wild (ALLES WAS ZAEHLT, brain tumor)
After spending years as one half of the gay couple that was ultimately responsible for getting TGoDT started, Dennis Grabosch decided to call it quits and move on. Roman Wild's dramatic death on ice in the arms of his boyfriend was written upon Dennis's request- he wanted no backdoor for his return.

Ron Bos (GOEDE TIJDEN SLECHTE TIJDEN, Ebola- virus)
It took people a while to warm up to Ron Bos, whose cuteness got everyone's golden boy Edwin to cheat on Lucas WHILE THE LATTER WAS IN A COMA. Ultimately, though, a lot of people were swayed by Ron's good looks and charm. People weren't happy with his untimely death...

Edwin Bouwhuis (GOEDE TIJDEN SLECHTE TIJDEN, Ebola- virus)
From a continuity point of view, anything BUT Edwin being infected with the virus would have been illogical - but still, his death came a bit out of left field, shocking fans around the world. Edwin died in his boyfriend's arms, surrounded by his family- in one of the most beautifully written and acted death bed scenes ever in a soap. Still, GTST- how COULD you? *sob*

We've anticipated it for a couple of weeks, following the release of a spoiler speaking of Lucas's sorrow- but it took us to actually watch the January 20 episode to let it sink in and realize they'd actually go through with it - on last Friday's GTST, the writers killed off one of the most popular characters. If you believe those involved, it was not Raynor's decision to leave - this was a dramatic decision, very much like with Jackson on EMMERDALE, Ianto on TORCHWOOD or Kieron on HOLLYOAKS.

While it is understandable that there is frustration and even - to a certain extent- grief over fictional character EDWIN BOUWHUIS, at the end of the day it is GTST's job to remain a topic at the water cooler and generate ratings for RTL. Success achieved: Edwin's death was discussed for days before the episode aired and the Friday episode has - with nearly 2,3 million viewers - been the highest rated in years. Discussions about homophobia at work here are ridiculous: The executive producer of the show is openly gay.

What this is is what a soap needs to be good at pure and simple, and GTST constantly excels at: calculated drama. We've lost one of our favorite characters and the knock-on effect on Meerdijk will be immense: Two core families, the Bouwhuis and the Sanders, are immediately touched by it. This will have a tremendous effect on Bianca's and Anton's relationship, on Lucas's still very much needed growing up and future relationships - but also on pretty much every other character in the small town.

We'd be more angry - and we won't let GTST off easily on the whole ridiculousness of a killer virus storyline - if the writing of the ACTUAL passing away and the acting of all characters involved wasn't so good. The inconsolable grief of everyone in the room is an amazing piece of television. Cynthia Abma (Bianca), Joep Sertons (Anton), Ferry Doedens (Lucas) and Guido Spek (Sjoerd) all did a brilliant job.

With Edwin, we lost a character who quickly propelled himself to one of the most popular here on TGoDT, but we also win something: Instead of the characters & pairing growing stale, as can often be witnessed on other soaps, we'll always remember the brilliance and utter drama & beauty of the Ludwin storyline. From the early beginning to the dramatic conclusion, we have a fully fleshed out, wonderfully soapy storyline that was never anything less than.

Good bye, Edwin. And thank you, Raynor, for your wonderful portrayal of him. And thank you to Kennard Bos, GTST's executive producer, for giving him to us in the first place.

Bianca picks up Edwin's phone and "accidentally" (we'll cut her some slack) hits the read button. Up pops a picture of Lucas in very little dress.

Edwin is totally embarrassed- and Bianca is having the time of her life winding him up. It all gets a little bit too much for Edwin's inner eye when Bianca starts explaining how these type of pictures where exchanged between her and Anton in the pre-cell phone era (and I'm sure newly resurrected Polaroid appreciates the shout out). Since Edwin is still on KILLER!-VIRUS!! watch, looking at Lucas' collection of Grindr profile pictures is all he has. Unless, as Bianca suggest, he gives another leftover from the pre-digital age a go- good old phone sex!

Once Ma & Pa Bouwhuis out the door, Edwin grabs the phone and calls Lucas to initiate. It takes Lucas a while to catch on- and them both another while until the realize they both have computers with webcams.

We LOVE how, without showing or saying all to much, Team GTST acknowledges that at the end of the day these are two horny boys in their prime. :)

Noud and Bianca's intervention is a roaring success! Edwin and Lucas discuss their current situation calmly and reasonably and are on the way to a good friendship, with Lucas slowly accepting that Ron is in the picture. They both thank their respective best friend and mother for this good idea.

Only, that didn't happen.

Lucas is FU-RI-OUS, thinking that Edwin - who unknowingly invited Ron to tag along to what was supposed to be Lucas and Edwin's 'I love you moment'- did this solely to piss Lucas off. Because Earth revolves around you, young Sanders! When Edwin and Lucas hear about the best laid plan that failed, they both are pretty pissed off.

Edwin, who may be so clumsy in matters of the heart that he makes Finn Hudson look like a well rounded person, plays the mature upper hand and goes to Lucas to apologize and talk it out. But Lucas? Is having none of it.

So Edwin makes a decision, which he announces when Ron shows up...

BELGIUM'S PRIME MINISTER IS AN OUT AND PROUD GAY MAN

It's been a while (540 days to be exact) since Belgium has an elected government- but today is the big day and we're entereing the age of Di Rupo I.

Why are we talking about this man?

Elio Di Rupo (60) as prime minister of Belgium is remarkable for more than one reason: He's the first person with an immigrant background (Italian) to get the job, he's the first French-speaker (whose Dutch is also a little iffy by all account) in 30 years, he's a socialist, while Flanders has the tendency to vote center to right and... he's openly gay.

The latter is a complete non-event in Belgium, where Di Rupo is well known and mostly well-respected. He's currently the mayor of Mons, so people know his politics and who he is.

He was first outed in 1996, when the usually privacy respecting media in the country joined in the witch-hunt in the midst of the horrific Dutroux child abuse scandal. Accused of being a pedophile, Di Rupo had to go on the defense. Cleared of that, it wasn't until 2001 when he set the record straight in the magazine of Flemish gay associations. In a recently published biography, he says that a journalist once asked him whether he was gay, to which he responded: "Oui, alors?" (Yes, so what?)

And that seems to be the attitude Belgium has taken. Di Rupo takes his privacy serious: Clubbers in Brussels can sometimes see him out and about, but the official stance is that he is single. Not that anything else would be a problem in a country with marriage equality...

Okay, I know this is not going to be a popular opinion and I guess everyone is kinda clued in on the fact that down the road #Ludwin is the endgame- but I kinda like seeing Edwin with Ron.

Also- kudos to TPTB for sparing us the nth tired variation of 'I need to see if I don't like girls after all'. And at least GTST is going strong and its gay super-couple is not broken up at the last minute, one half being replaced by an unlikely successor who has all the charm of a NYC sewer rat at 3 am.

Another hilarious aspect is the reaction of Anton and Bianca- her face PRICELESS and Anton? How awesome was his 'We're hospitable people.' :) I also loved how they kinda nicely tried to tell Lucas to stay away, hoping he'd get the hint and Anton didn't immediately jump up with joy breaking the news to him.

Down the line I'll predict that Edwin will realize how strong his feelings for Lucas are, and Ron will leave Meerdijk heartbroken - unless the new pairing should prove to be super popular (doubtful, given the majority of comments, but even then it takes only one strongly written twist to make Ron unpopular again) and TPTB have to come up with a new plan :).

GTSTfanMark has only gone and DONE it! RTL Digital, the subsidiary responsible for the YouTube channel and RTL XL, has agreed to continue to allow subtitled GTST to be uploaded to YouTube.

There is one, easy to live with, restriction: Mark has been asked to delay uploading his clips by one day- i.e. when Lucas, Edwin and/or Ron appear on the 25th, you won't see the episode subtitled until the 26th at the earliest. We believe that is a very fair trade off, given that they could've just said no.

It seems like RTL Nederland is done with the international attention. Clips of GTST have been rejected from YouTube since late last week and now Mark's vimeo account was closed- despite having the support from the show's executive producer, Kennard Bos.

In the short term, we have to accept RTL's decision to protect one of their most valuable assets (GTST is on a ratings high and one of the most popular programs in the country at the moment), though we have to wonder why the decision comes now, after months of letting it continue, with support from the actors, mentions on RTL Boulevard and so on...

We hope RTL Nederland can find it in their hearts to reconsider. We would hate to lose Lucas, Edwin (and, yes - we'll admit it - Ron).

DANNY MILLER LEAVING EMMERDALE

Fans of a bit of rough trade need to be strong now...

Actor Danny Miller has confirmed that he will be leaving his role as Aaron Livesy in Emmerdale in Spring 2012.

Danny, who has won several awards for his portrayal of Aaron, says, "It has been an incredibly difficult decision but after three years and much soul-searching I am eager to explore other roles.

"I am so grateful to Emmerdale for the opportunity that I have been given and have loved every moment. I will miss everyone enormously but this might not be the last we see of Aaron."

Stuart Blackburn, series producer says, "We completely respect Danny's decision and are very grateful for the hard work and commitment he has brought to his role.

"We wish him all the best for the future and in the meantime there is still plenty more drama to come from Aaron well into 2012."

It's not any less gruesome, or hurtful, or plainly wrong just because it happens to the straight super-star quarterback or the Irish exchange student you have chosen to just make fun of instead of actually using him as a fun supporting character, or the Jewish girl with a larger-than-life ego (aka TRYING TO MAKE HER DREAM ACTUALLY COME TRUE)- and not the gay character.

REVIEW: "WEEKEND"

WEEKEND opened in Ireland this weekend and I have to say - this may have been the best gay movie I have seen in a very long time. And I am talking about independent gay cinema, not advertised-as-independent-but-really-intended-for-the-mainstream stuff like MILK or A SINGLE MAN. Those are both brilliant and important films, but ultimately they both keep a safe distance so straight audiences don't get (too) uncomfortable.

WEEKEND tells the story of Russell (Tom Cullen), who- after a house party at a friend's house- spontaneously goes to a club and is picked up by Glen (Chris New). The two have a one night stand, but even in that awkward post coital conversation the next morning (for dramatic purposes even more awkward then normal, for Glen has brought a tape recorder) they feel there might be something more. They end up spending the weekend together: having sex, taking drugs, going to parties- but mostly talking.

Along the way, the film makes some very good, self-aware points about gay life and gay-themed art crossing over into the mainstream. And indeed "gay" crossing into the mainstream. It offers a surprisingly honest depiction of two guys meeting in a club, playing out like a gay version of BEFORE SUNRISE, the 1995 cult Ethan Hawke / Julie Delpy vehicle. In some form or another, most of us will probably have had a weekend like that at some point in out life.

WEEKEND has managed to cross over into the mainstream and in the -for independent films- ever important 'Average revenue per number of screens' was second only to TINTIN in the UK last week. This is really no small feat: A small, independent film that cost 120,000 GBP to make, has an 18 rating from the BBFC was, simplified, nearly as bankable as a multi-million dollar family movie that had the full PR machine of Hollywood going for it.

Everything about this film is refreshing- we are not fed the 'universal love story' line. This is a gay movie for all intents and purposes. You are not treated to a watered down version of gay sex, there is no attempt to present these two boys as wholesome better-than-thou individuals who live in better decorated houses, have better clothes and more disposable income: Russell works as a life guard, lives in a council flat, has a shitty prepaid phone and his main port of transportation of a 30 quid bike he bought at a charity shop- where also most of the stuff in his flat comes from- but can more or less honestly say that he's happy.

Andrew Haigh has made a masterpiece that you should not miss.

Weekend is currently playing in select theaters in the UK, Republic of Ireland, the US and Germany. It is available on demand on most American cable & satellite systems.

Just as he tries to tell Lucas that he isn't as nice as everyone thinks, Ron walks in and Edwin looks mega-guilty.
